Summer Dog Walking Tips

Temperatures are rising here in the mountains which means longer days, swimming holes, dining al fresco, and outdoor concerts. Summer in Asheville is one of our favorite seasons. Although warmer weather is welcomed, it does add a few more things to think about when it comes to walking your dog.

We love taking all our Lumen dogs on walks and just because it’s summer doesn’t mean we have to stop, just make adjustments. Ensuring your dog is happy, healthy, and safe are our main priorities. Here are a few tips and tricks that we implement in our pet care services during the summer months!

1. Start early in the morning or later in the evening.

The days are long and hot in the summer! The high in Asheville averages at 85 degrees for the months of July and August. We highly recommend starting early in the morning or later in the evening to ensure not only the safety of your pet but their most enjoyment.

2. Bring water and a collapsible bowl.

Water is key for humans on a hot day so why wouldn’t it be for our dogs? Collapsable bowls are a great and easy way to carry water and hydrate your pet along the way. Clip to your leash or your belt to keep things convenient.

Some of our favorite bowls:

3. Check the ground temperature.

Use the back of your hand to see if the ground temperature is too hot for your dog’s pads. If it’s too hot to hold it there for 5 seconds then it’s too hot for your pup’s paws. If the ground is too hot, either head back inside or check out these protective boots.

4. Consider investing in a cooling vest or bandana.

Cooling vests and bandanas are a great way to cool your pup down while still letting them do their favorite activity. Just because it’s hot doesn’t mean they have to stay inside! A cooling mat is also great for after your walk.
